The church revealed in May 2017 that it would begin providing wedding services in a “cannabis-friendly” environment. Elevationists can be members of any religion without having to convert since Elevationism is seen as a complement rather than a substitute for current faith. Following expanded media interest, the church’s membership grew to 200 people from about 50 within the first week. In the following two weeks, it reportedly rose to 500 people.
Building of the church:
The congregation is located in a 113-year-old renovated Lutheran church, formerly known as Mount Calvary Apostolic Church, in Denver’s Washington Park area. In July 2015, a business co-owned by church co-founder Steve Berke and his parents bought the church property with the goal of converting it into apartments. Berke’s coworkers and associates, who went on to become co-founding members of the church, persuaded him, and ultimately the group, to start a new church rather than turn the building into condos. The quirky surrealist interior was drawn by Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel, who had previously painted abandoned churches in Spain and Morocco. Kenny Scharf, an American artist, created graffiti-inspired murals on the building’s facade. Church Cannabis Company
Elevation Ministries signed a two-year branding and management deal with Bang Digital Media, a publicly-traded firm founded by church co-founder Steve Berke that specializes in cannabis marketing, in March 2017.
